The Rescue of Artistic Heritage During the Second World War

Before being razed to the ground by the Allies in 1944, the Abbey of Montecassino was home to works of art of extraordinary importance.

Thanks to the efforts of monks and courageous men, this vast heritage, together with the monastery’s property, was transferred and brought to safety in Rome.

As in the past, Montecassino played a key role in our cultural history during the Second World War.
